2018 Champagne Picnic

By Peter Wright
Sunday, September 30th, 2018

Go, or NoGo; that was the quandary with which we struggled, during the week prior to the event!

We couldn’t decide whether we were facing “generally fair, but a chance for isolated showers”, as our ever-popular weather persons spew, when they need a catchall for uncertainty, or “profound wetness”, which seemed quite likely.  In fact, I caught myself playing occasional mind games, for instance, considering at length whether, if the noun “Rain” were actually a verb i.e. “To Rain” it seemed  reasonable that it would have a similar and somewhat parallel verb, “Wet” i.e. “To Wet”.  Conjugation of that “verb” might go something along the lines of, I wet; you wet; he wets; she wets; we wet; you wet; they wet; I think I remember that the first “you wet” in this conjugation, is singular in form, as in, “Hey you!  No not you; the tall one standing beside you… down in front!”. The second “you wet” is more of a plural thing, as in “Y’all sure love them dang ferrin cars!”.  Note that nowhere in that conjugation is the form, which exists only as part of the Jamaican vernacular, “IT WET!” essentially meaning, “MON!  I shoulda stayed home because this Rain seeping into my shorts, messing with stuff, and running out the other end and into my loafers, better quit damned soon!”

But I needn’t have wasted so many of those few remaining brain cells in such frivolous contemplations, because it was indeed a fine day at the appointed place of the 2018 Champagne Picnic!  Not perfect by any means; clouds, therefore no sun; chilly by Jamaican standards but a piece of cake around these parts; and only one report of a bite by a determined wench skeeter, in spite of the hoards that sought to drag big people away, with no provocation, only a week earlier.  Our sincere appreciation to Jerry who volunteered to visit and fog the pointy-nosed skeeter swine into submission, the day before the event.

So, absent rain and skeeters, we partied!!!  The Faithful, friends every one, arrived in favorite shiny toys, and it wasn’t long before old friendships were renewed and new friendships were developed, all because of three letters… B, M & W.  Funny how an assembly of metal castings, nuts, bolts, wires, increasing amounts of plastic, sumptuous leather, some rubber here and there, and glass… how could I forget the glass, can be made to have “soul”, and that “soul” can be the driving force behind lifelong friendships among precious folks.  As I looked around at the happy faces of all present, from friends I had not seen for certainly 35 years, to friends who we welcomed as recent new members of Badger Bimmers, I marveled that such a diverse group could enjoy each other so much, on a damp, cold Sunday afternoon, in the middle of someone’s hayfield in southeastern Wisconsin.

The food. Oh Man… the food!  This gets better every year!  The conversation; finding out what makes people tick is always a delightful revelation…and there was lots of that!  The eye candy; new 3s, older 3s, a trio of ‘02s including the gorgeous Bimmer in a Barn, 5er twins, X5 twins, Z and 2 series convertibles, the first i-mobile we’ve ever had the opportunity to welcome to this event, a coveted Alpina B7, two 5er wagens including one on serious steroids, Ms including a trio of M2s and a pair of sought-after e46 M3s; horsepower ratings of, oh I don’t know… maybe just north of 100 to upwards of 550?  That’s a whole lot of horses to clean up after!!!  But we delighted in each and every one, including the obligatory twin antique John Deere tractors.

Winners?  Silly question.  We all won.  Such a delightful, relaxed event. But, ultimately, one toy was shinier, better presented, and was the perfect representation of who we are, given the history of the Badger Bimmers’ Champagne Picnic.  The big prize went to the gorgeous Atlantik Blau, Bimmer in a Barn 2002, and her proud owners Pam and Bill Nicoud.  Well deserved, kids!!!  I’m still drooling….

So… how to bring this drivel to a close.  Well you could start by thanking a few folks, couldn’t you?  Ah yes… thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thank you to all who poked “weather” in the eye and set aside the time to enjoy this event… indeed some of life’s special moments; you kids are the best!  Thank you to Jenny McAdow and Zimbrick BMW for the gracious gifts!  We almost got to have a M5 Competition at the event, fresh off the showroom floor.  But it had just been detailed and the thought of their new toy chasing around in muddy fields, driven by a bargefull of hooligans wired on champagne, nixed that possibility; maybe next year!  Need a new toy?  Go see Jenny!!!  Thank you Badger Bimmer’s Board for your ongoing support.  Finally, as before, thank you to My Navigator for humoring me once again, and taking care of all the many details.

The event is over.  Another success.  The blades of grass on the lawn have been coerced back into place, and the memories of a beautiful afternoon are stellar.

And silliness is still racing through my brain… a ditty from my misguided youth:

Whether the weather be fine, or whether the weather be not;

Whether the weather be cold, or whether the weather be hot;

We’ll weather the weather, whatever the weather,

Whether we like it, or not.

The best is yet to come!

OktoberFAST 2018

By Darcy Yench
Sunday, September 23rd, 2018

What a weekend it was!  Weather was very windy on Friday but all 80 or so had lots of track time. Overall, we had 192 register this year. The Drivers School had 164 registered including 48 instructors. A BIG thanks to the brave instructors for helping our students learn their cars better and reach their goals! Thanks also to our classroom instructors Brian Spiewak and Nick Roush and exercise instructor Chris Fredette. Thanks to Dave and Kris Tatem and all the other volunteers that helped make this year’s event so successful.

The Saturday Dinner at Osthoff had over 70 in attendance. We had a nice handpicked selection of 4 wines and a holder donated by John Dohmen that went to Bill Nicoud. PhotosbyEdmund donated 3 20” x 30” prints. The lucky winners were David Burman, Donna Daufenbach and Scott Dodge. The big prize of a 2019 Driving School entry went to Bryan Chamberlin.

On Sunday we were visited by a group of students and their Instructors from Theodor-Litt-Schule College in Giessen, Germany. They were here as part of an exchange program in association with Milwaukee Area Technical College in Mequon, WI and headed by one of our participants, Jay Grossert. Darcy and Erik Ivarson drove their vans around the track which they reported was a great time and very memorable part of their 10 day stay in the USA.

We thank WeatherTech for their continued sponsorship of our event and hope you enjoy the custom US made cooler. Call or go online to WeatherTECH and thank them for their continued support and get some floor mats – Winter is coming!

Another thanks goes to PhotosbyEdmund! Edmund Lacis continues to photograph for the club event. If you couldn’t make it to the trailer, your Friday or Saturday session photos are available at:  https://www.photosbyedmund.com/BMW/2018

HUGE thanks to Chris Schuh and CS Motorsports. Your professional Tech and track mechanical services are well appreciated!

The school continues to evolve and the Advanced/Instructor session change was well received. If you didn’t get in this year, be sure to sign up EARLY next year. Next year’s dates will be October 4th for our Advanced/Instructor day and October 5-6, 2019 for the Driving School dates.

OktoberFAST Vehicle Inspections

By Jeff Fait
Saturday, September 15th, 2018

Pat Kummrow and the staff at Kummrow Automotive in Glendale provided FREE technical inspections on Saturday, September 15 to make sure our cars were ready for OktoberFAST at Road America!

Many club members took advantage of this great offer – I did and was glad since Pat’s team discovered that my brake pads, which I had imagined were in A-OK shape, had actually worn to the point of being paper thin!  Because of their inspection I found out in plenty of time to order and install new brake pads and ensure my car was in tip-top shape for OktoberFAST.

2018 BMW Night at Brew City Cruise Night

By Jeff Fait
Tuesday, August 14th, 2018

Tuesday, August 14th, was the seventh annual Badger Bimmers BMW & MINI Night at Brew City Cruise Night in Mequon, WI.  This event has become a must-do gathering in the summer!

Brew City Cruise Night is a weekly gathering of car enthusiasts from around southeast Wisconsin.  They host 22 Tuesday night car shows (from May through September) at nines American Bistro in Mequon, with each week being dedicated to a feature marque, club, or theme.

For the August 14th Badger Bimmers night, BMWs and their owners came from far and wide to show off their cars and socialize with other enthusiasts.  Before the night ended, nearly 90 BMWs and MINIs put in an appearance, along with a plethora of other cars that came to share the BMW love and enjoy the fantastic Wisconsin summer weather.  Club members from all over southeast and central Wisconsin, along with a big group from northern Illinois, made the trek in an astounding variety of BMW vehicles.  The Club and the Marque were well represented!

Start making plans for next year’s 8th Annual event, tentatively scheduled for the second week of August in 2018.  I’d like to thank everyone who attended this year for coming out, and also give a big round of applause for the Brew City Cruise Night volunteers who helped make the night a special one.

IMSA/Continental Road Race Road America Car Corral 2018

By Darcy Yench
Sunday, August 5th, 2018

If you weren’t there, you missed another fine event with the Badger Bimmers at Road America, August 4-5, 2018.
Thursday, 8/2 Darcy, John Morgan and Brian Bill set up the grounds with our pathway into the corral.

Friday 8/3 was a fun day to just hang around with no formal activities but several BMWs made their way into the corral.

Saturday marked the start of our 11th Annual IMSA Car Corral.  Thank you to Dave and Chris Tatem for holding down the registration table.  We had 102 people and 54 cars show up for a jam packed day of activities.  We had paddock tours with BimmerWorld,

Turner Motorsports

No. 24 of John Edwards and Jesse Krohn had a long pitstop to make repairs and finished in 8th place in GTLM and the BMW Team RLL M8 GTLM No. 25

of Alexander Sims and Connor De Phillippi and the leading the race laps 42 – 64 until it ran out of fuel right across from us up the hill into the pit lane with 2 lap to go finishing 6th.

We watched in disbelief as the car rolled back down into a safe location behind the barrier across from the corral.

There were lots of hot laps provided both Saturday and Sunday for our participants around Road America with Andy Van Cleef chasing Mike Renner in the BMW Driving School BMW M5’s during IMSA’s Hot Lap program.

A BIG SHOUT OUT TO BMW of Milwaukee North for sponsoring our beverages for the weekend and lunches were sponsored by Enterprise BMW of Appleton, International Auto in Milwaukee, Windy City Chapter of BMW CCA and Zimbrick BMW of Madison.  Thanks to ALL of our sponsors for again making this the best car corral yet!

Hope to see YOU next year!  Same weekend, August 3-4 2019.  Mark your calendar!
